Nearly 40 people escaped the blaze Sunday at a three-story, wood-frame building in Lowell.

Two Massachusetts firefighters were hurt fighting a four-alarm fire Sunday.

The fire at the three-story, wood-frame building in Lowell started at 9 a.m., WBZ-TV reports. The firefighters who were hurt were part of the Chelmsford Fire Department, which was providing mutual aid, and they suffered minor hand and ankle injuries.

Nearly 40 people were able to escape the burning building, which contains seven residential and three commercial units, according to the Lowell Sun.

"The building is all cut up, it’s an old building," Lowell Fire Chief Jeff Winward told WBZ, explaining the difficult nature of the blaze. "There’s walls dividing the third floor, so we had a tough time getting to the fire for a long time."
